2 Minutes to Midnight ist ein frisches Design, das ein Ziehspielsystem verwendet, um den Kalten Krieg in 5-Jahres-Zyklen zu erkunden, beginnend im Jahr 1946 und über 9 Züge bis 1990. Der Umfang und die Tiefe des Spiels sind mit keinem anderen Spiel auf dem Markt für diesen historischen Zeitraum vergleichbar – es handelt sich um eine detaillierte Simulation des Kalten Krieges, die Militär, Wirtschaft, Politik und Handel abdeckt, alles in einem spielbaren Paket, das die Komplexität verbirgt und es Ihnen ermöglicht, sich auf die Strategie zu konzentrieren. Ein Szenario dauert 1-3 Stunden bis zu 6-7 Stunden für das vollständige Kampagnenspiel. Das Spiel ist hochgradig asymmetrisch - die USA haben Präsidentschaftswahlen und nationale Schulden, um sich Sorgen zu machen, während die Sowjets versuchen müssen, ihren Fünfjahresplan zu erreichen und die Freiheit (oder deren Fehlen) innerhalb der Sowjetunion selbst zu navigieren, mit dem Risiko, dass das gesamte kommunistische System zusammenbricht, wenn Sie zu schnell reformieren. Das bedeutet, dass Sie sich nicht ganz sicher sind, was in jedem Spiel passieren wird - Sie können kein bestimmtes Land laden, weil Sie wissen, dass etwas passieren wird, da es sehr wenige feste Ereignisse gibt. Der Zweck der Ereignisse besteht darin, Reibung hinzuzufügen - Sie sind niemals vollständig in Kontrolle und müssen auf sich ändernde Ereignisse reagieren. Militär wird in drei Bereichen abgedeckt - nuklear, was Aggressionen gegen Ihre Nation verhindert; konventionell - was Optionen bietet, aggressiver zu sein; Marine - die die Informationsbeschaffung und die Fähigkeit zur Invasion vom Meer aus verstärkt sowie feindliche strategische U-Boote jagt. Spione werden von Spielern eingesetzt, um zu versuchen, Staatsstreiche zu initiieren oder sie zu unterdrücken, und für die Sowjets, um sich einzuschleichen und westliche Technologie zu stehlen. Die CIA wird damit beschäftigt sein, diese Geheimnisse zu sichern und fortschrittliche Handelsartikel von den Sowjets fernzuhalten. Schließlich gibt es eine Geheimdienstspur - eine hohe Geheimdienstfähigkeit von U2-Spionageflugzeugen, Satelliten oder U-Booten gibt mehr Möglichkeiten, die Ereignisse zu beeinflussen, während sie auftreten, und schneller als Ihr Gegner zu reagieren.
