Founders of Gloomhaven ist ein wettbewerbsorientiertes Spiel mit Plättchenlegen, Aktionsauswahl und Stadtbau, bei dem jeder Spieler eine fantastische Rasse steuert, die daran arbeitet, die Stadt Gloomhaven zu bauen und Einfluss auf ihre Bewohner zu gewinnen. Dies ist ein eigenständiges Spiel, das im selben Universum wie Gloomhaven angesiedelt ist. Die Ereignisse finden jedoch Hunderte von Jahren vor Gloomhaven statt und zeigen den ursprünglichen Bau der Stadt.

In Founders of Gloomhaven verwenden die Spieler Aktionskarten, um Ressourcenbauten auf der Karte der Stadt zu platzieren, nutzen diese Ressourcen, um fortschrittlichere Ressourcen zu schaffen, und liefern sie dann an vorgeschlagene Baustellen, um Prestige zu verdienen. Ein einzelner Spieler kann jedoch nicht alles alleine tun, da er nur eine kleine Anzahl von Ressourcentypen importieren kann, abhängig von seiner Rasse. Um fortschrittlichere Ressourcen zu schaffen, müssen sie mit anderen Spielern zusammenarbeiten.
