Im Kartenspiel Race for the Galaxy bauen die Spieler galaktische Zivilisationen, indem sie Spielkarten vor sich ausspielen, die Welten oder technische und soziale Entwicklungen repräsentieren. Einige Welten ermöglichen es den Spielern, Waren zu produzieren, die später konsumiert werden können, um entweder Karten zu ziehen oder Siegpunkte zu erhalten, wenn die entsprechenden Technologien verfügbar sind. Diese werden hauptsächlich durch die Entwicklungen und Welten bereitgestellt, die nicht produzieren können, aber die ausgefeilteren Produktionswelten bieten ebenfalls diese Boni. Zu Beginn jeder Runde wählen die Spieler jeweils geheim und gleichzeitig eine der sieben Rollen aus, die den Phasen entsprechen, in denen die Runde fortschreitet. Durch die Auswahl einer Rolle aktivieren die Spieler diese Phase für diese Runde, was jedem Spieler die Möglichkeit gibt, die Aktion dieser Phase auszuführen. Wenn ein Spieler beispielsweise die Rolle des Ansiedelns wählt, hat jeder Spieler die Möglichkeit, einen der Planeten aus seiner Hand anzusiedeln. Der Spieler, der die Rolle gewählt hat, erhält jedoch einen Bonus, der nur für ihn gilt. Aber Boni können auch durch Entwicklungen erworben werden, daher muss man darauf achten, wenn ein anderer Spieler ebenfalls von seiner Rollenwahl profitiert.
