‘Heart: The City Beneath’ is a fantasy horror role-playing game by Grant Howitt and Christopher Taylor, beautifully illustrated by Felix Miall. Heart is a dungeon crawler based on exploring a mad and utterly absurd underground world, a place that shifts at every moment, composed of impossible locations that somehow coexist, separated by winding, dark, suspended, inverted passages. Players take on the role of Terebrants, explorers determined to uncover this nightmare realm in search of answers to their questions or to satisfy an obsessive thirst for knowledge and discovery. The Heart is a place so unhealthy, absurd, terrible, and enchanting that it renders everything else irrelevant. It is a place that belongs to another dimension, whose origins and purposes are unfathomable. Terebrants band together in groups to empower each other and face the horrors of this place, seeking out Known Places or those yet to be discovered, trying to map the territory and help one another by digging tunnels or relying on already trodden paths, knowing they will be fraught with monsters, horrors, and insidious evils of all kinds. ‘Heart: The City Beneath’ has won seven ENnies Awards: GOLD AWARDS: Writing, Setting, Layout and Design.
