Five days after D-Day, on June 11, 1944, men of the 29th Cavalry Reconnaissance Company were ordered to maintain contact between the US 101st Airborne Division and the 175th Infantry Regiment (29th Infantry Division) near Sainte-Marguerite-d’Elle. They were then sent to scout the roads leading to Moon-sur-Elle. Strong opposition awaited them and the fighting was fierce. It was crucial for current operations to establish an observation post in the village, so it had to be taken at any cost!
