Description Description
Play as one of the ancient civilizations and start building your Monument! In Monuments, you play as one of the ancient civilizations: the Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans, and Incas. It is your task to build your Monument as quickly as possible, but you cannot neglect your empire and its inhabitants. The game ends after the round in which a player completes their Monument, but only the player with the most victory points wins the game! Monuments offers a different take on the civilization genre. There are no ages, tech trees, progress tracks, no long waits between turns, no game that lasts 4 hours, and no rulebook of 40 pages. In Monuments, the focus is on building your Monument. Each player has the same 10 action cards. When it is your turn, you do just one thing. Either you play one of your 10 action cards from your hand, perform the simple action it states, and discard it. Or, you take back all the cards you have previously discarded into your hand. This results in very little downtime between players' turns. A game lasts about 60-120 minutes; 30 minutes per player depending on whether players have played Monuments before and how much competition there is at the end of the game. One of your action cards is 'Build a layer of your Monument'. Each Monument requires 5 layers to be fully built. There are three requirements to build a layer. First, you must control a number of (land) areas. Additionally, you must deliver a number of resources. And finally, you must also give up a number of workers. With the 'Production' and 'Population' actions, it is not difficult to get the resources and workers you need. But to build layer 5 and thus end the game, you need 12 land areas. And you only have 9 on your home continent and 2 on nearby islands. So you need to find your 12th area elsewhere, assuming your opponents do not attack your continent...
So how do you get those areas, resources, and workers? You have 10 action cards, and most cards work together with other cards. For example, you can first move your workers with the ‘Movement’ action. Then you play ‘Production’ and let these workers produce the resources you need. Then you play ‘Build a building’ and spend those resources to build a village, for example. If you have two workers in a village, you can play ‘Population’ and a worker joins. Later in the game, when you are allowed to build military units, you can play ‘Train Military Units’ and convert a worker into an army, air force, or navy. If you then have military units adjacent to enemy territory, you can play ‘Attack’ and try to take over that area! If you have enough areas, resources, and workers, you can play ‘Build a layer of your Monument’ and thus build your Monument. Every time you do this, you receive two bonuses for it. You have a personal bonus deck from which you may choose a one-time bonus. There are also common bonuses, from which you may choose one. The earlier you do this, the more options you have!
Then you have three other action cards. With ‘Trade’ you can trade resources with the bank. With ‘Take Goal Cards’ you can draw a number of goal cards and keep at least one. This card lists 1, 2, or 3 goals. If you achieve all the goals on a card before the end of the game, you will receive a number of victory points for it. But beware, for each goal card you have not completed, you may receive a number of negative points! And finally, with ‘Upgrade an action card’ you can upgrade one of your 10 action cards. Each action card has two sides, a green and a red. You start the game with the red sides facing up. For two resources, you can upgrade a card to the green side. From now on, this action card performs a stronger action! For example, with the ‘Movement’ card, you can move 2 units when the card is on the red side, and 3 units when it is on the green side. And with ‘Production’, you can produce on 2 areas with the red side, and on 3 areas with the green side.

Additionally, there are a number of things to keep in mind. Each civilization starts the game with a unique starting position on the board, a unique trait, a different scorecard, and a personal bonus deck. These ensure that each game is completely different! Once someone builds their fifth Monument layer, the game ends after the current round. Each civilization scores slightly better on one trait and slightly worse on another trait, but basically, this is what you score points for:

  • 6 VP per layer built Monument
  • 1 VP per 2 workers on the board
  • 1 VP per 3 resources you control
  • 1 VP per 3 military strength
  • 1 VP per land area you control
  • 1 VP per action card you have upgraded
  • 1/2/3 VP per goal card that has been successfully completed
  • 0/-1/-2 VP per goal card that has not been completed
  • VP bonus for players who have built the 5th layer of their Monument

The player with the most VP wins Monuments!
