Thorgal: The Board Game is a cooperative adventure game in which 1-4 players take on the roles of Thorgal, his wife Aaricia, their son Jolan, and Kriss - a deadly warrior - and experience a series of adventures.
The game consists of ten standalone scenarios, each requiring about 90-120 minutes of playtime. The scenarios do not form a campaign nor have legacy features, allowing them to be played by different gaming groups over an extended period.
Thorgal: The Board Game comes with a book of cards. Each scenario is played on a different card, which players explore while fulfilling the scenario's objectives, promising completely different adventures, hidden opportunities, and vibrant characters. Players can freely decide whether to travel in a group or split up to explore multiple areas simultaneously. They also complete side quests that can help them win a scenario.
Another important feature of the game is the storybook, which contains narrative descriptions of the encounters that characters make in each scenario. The adventures described in the book are specific to each scenario and character, but many of them are randomly chosen within a scenario, allowing the game to be replayed. The characters' morals and previous decisions play a significant role in how encounters are resolved.
While Thorgal: The Board Game has a strong narrative element, it also offers a fan-favorite action selection mechanism. Similar to games like Puerto Rico or Race for the Galaxy, the active player in each round selects an action that is executed by the entire group, with the active player performing the full version and all passive players the weaker version, regardless of their position on the board. This creates an interesting decision space and makes each round important for everyone at the table.
Another key mechanism is character development. Their abilities are improved during the game and negatively affected by wounds they suffer in combat. Characters gather resources and craft items that help them survive in the dangerous world, gaining companions they meet along the way.
