Dans un tournant astucieux, les dés sont utilisés comme ressources, chaque face/numéro représentant une ressource différente. Certaines ressources sont stables, permettant de les stocker entre les tours, tandis que d'autres doivent être utilisées immédiatement. Les bâtiments offrent de nouvelles capacités, telles qu'une production accrue, une manipulation des ressources et des points de victoire supplémentaires. L'utilisation des dés comme ressources facilite un mini-jeu de gestion des ressources dynamique et en constante évolution, tandis que les joueurs s'efforcent de gagner des points de victoire en ajoutant des bâtiments à leur tableau en route vers la victoire.

Colony comprend 28 types de cartes de bâtiment différents, dont seulement sept sont utilisés à chaque partie en plus des bâtiments fixes qui sont utilisés chaque fois que vous jouez.
