Descriptif

End of the Trail est un jeu de cartes compétitif pour 2 à 4 prospecteurs et chercheurs de fortune. Les joueurs gèrent une main de cartes pour sécuriser des transports, prospecter des terrains et tenter de gagner un titre pour plus de terres à la table de poker. Les cartes ont trois utilisations, chacune correspondant à une phase particulière du jeu : prospecter des tuiles de terrain et découvrir combien d'or une revendication produira, collecter et jouer des cartes qui construisent une bonne main de poker, et acheter des cartes supplémentaires aux enchères pour aider à la prospection, au poker, ou aux deux.

La prospection de terres est une affaire risquée. Les joueurs doivent choisir leurs cartes avec soin, car ils ont des chances limitées de découvrir les sources d'or les plus abondantes. Chaque fois qu'ils jouent une carte et jettent un œil à une tuile de terrain, ils doivent décider s'ils vont revendiquer une terre, en plaçant la tente de leur prospecteur, ou s'ils vont tenter leur chance et essayer de trouver une meilleure revendication. Mais si une nouvelle tuile de terrain qu'ils examinent produit moins d'or que leur tuile inspectée précédemment, la chance du joueur est épuisée, et il est contraint d'accepter la revendication moins abondante.

Lors de la ruée vers l'or en Californie, des fortunes ont été gagnées et perdues à la table de poker. À la fin de chaque tour, les joueurs doivent sélectionner deux des cartes qu'ils ont jouées pour la prospection et les ajouter à la main de poker stud devant eux sur la table. À la fin du jeu, les joueurs révèlent leurs mains de poker. Le joueur avec la meilleure main de poker gagne une autre revendication, plaçant sa quatrième et dernière tente de prospecteur sur une tuile de terrain.

À la fin du jeu, toutes les valeurs cachées sont révélées et les joueurs additionnent l'or de leurs diverses revendications. Le joueur avec le plus d'or gagne.
