As often happened during the Cold War, a relatively little-known region suddenly came into focus. Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, a staunch US ally in Africa, was aging and increasingly dictatorial. In 1974, a group of young Marxist officers staged a coup and took power. This revolutionary leadership triggered a chain of events that upset the regional balance of power and unleashed all known elements of Cold War competition in the Horn of Africa. Gleichgewicht Des Schreckens Am Roten Meer calls players to take up arms again and bear the weight of a duel, this time for East Africa, the Arabian Gulf, and the vital sea routes between them.
