Description Description
The close relationship between Japanese tattooing and the dark world of the yakuza has helped to permeate this form of artistic expression with an aura of mystery. The culture of irezumi is deep and rich in meanings, shapes, and motifs transferred from colorful woodblock prints to the skin, to embellish and protect those who choose to wear them. Through images and analysis, the volume reveals the origin, meaning, and secrets behind the major motifs of traditional Japanese tattooing: animals, mythological creatures, Buddhist deities, flowers, historical figures, shunga, yokai... The work opens with a brief overview of the history of this art in the Land of the Rising Sun, and includes a gallery of original drawings by the author. Yori Moriarty began his tattooing career in 2005 with American artist Jason Kundell, immediately drawn to traditional Japanese tattooing. In 2007, he made his first trip to Japan and met master Osakan Horitoshi Izumi who taught him everything about the practice of Japanese tattooing. He worked in his studio between 2008 and 2011.
