Description Description

BATTLE OF CRETE #1 [New Zealand soldiers vs German hostiles]

The Battle of Crete marks the occasion when the German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) executed the first large airborne invasion in military history, only to be met with fierce resistance from Allied forces, reinforced by Cretan civilians who also took up arms against the invaders.

The defenders' initial fighting was so fierce that the German offensive briefly faltered, before Allied hesitation allowed the Germans to reorganize and regain the initiative, forcing the Allies to retreat and eventually surrender.

The success of the airborne operation demonstrated the mobility and capabilities of airborne assault forces.
