Yahtzee to klasyczna gra w kości, w którą gra się 5 kośćmi. Tura każdego gracza polega na rzucaniu kośćmi do 3 razy w nadziei na uzyskanie 1 z 13 kategorii. Przykłady kategorii to 3 tego samego rodzaju, 4 tego samego rodzaju, sekwencja, full house itp. Każdy gracz stara się wypełnić wynik dla każdej kategorii, ale nie zawsze jest to możliwe. Gdy wszyscy gracze wprowadzą wynik lub zero dla wszystkich 13 kategorii, gra się kończy, a całkowite wyniki są porównywane. Tradycyjna gra (domena publiczna) Yacht poprzedza grę zarejestrowaną i ma nieco inny system punktacji. Istnieją cztery podstawowe różnice w punktacji między tradycyjną grą Yacht a Yahtzee. Są to: 1) Yacht nie ma kategorii Trzy tego samego rodzaju, 2) nie ma bonusów w Yacht, 3) nie ma zasad Jokerów w Yacht, a 4) kategoria Full House jest punktowana jako suma kości.
