Descriptif

Evil High Priest est un jeu de placement d'ouvriers dans lequel les joueurs incarnent des prêtres d'une entité lovecraftienne. Tous les joueurs vénèrent le même Grand Ancien, mais ils ne sont emphatiquement pas des alliés. Lorsqu'ils réveillent leur Grand Ancien, il décidera lequel d'entre eux est le meilleur (en fonction des points de victoire) et nommera ce prêtre, et ce prêtre seulement, Grand Prêtre, qui gagne.

Le jeu contient des cartes, des jetons en carton et plusieurs tableaux différents - chaque joueur a un sanctuaire intérieur, plus un tableau de prêtre pour gérer sa secte. De plus, il y a un tableau de ville, représentant le pays de Lovecraft ; un tableau de rituel, représentant des sorts magiques ; et un tableau de culte, représentant le Grand Ancien que vous cherchez à libérer.

Le jeu se déroule en phases d'action. Les joueurs prennent des tours pour déplacer leurs cultistes afin d'activer divers sites sur les différents tableaux, rassemblant des ressources, invoquant des monstres, brisant des Signes Anciens et lançant des raids d'enquêteurs (qui attaquent tous les joueurs). Lorsque tous les joueurs n'ont plus de cultistes, la phase d'action se termine et les joueurs récupèrent leurs cultistes, libérant ainsi les sites du tableau pour la prochaine phase d'action. La victoire est déterminée lorsque le dernier Signe Ancien bloquant votre Grand Ancien est brisé, et à ce moment-là, tout le monde compte les points. Différentes ressources valent des montants différents, mais les plus précieuses sont les Signes Anciens.

Ce qui motive le jeu, c'est le besoin du joueur de recruter plus de cultistes et de rassembler plus de ressources, équilibré par son besoin de briser les Signes Anciens et de se protéger contre les raids d'enquêteurs mortels. Inhabituel parmi les jeux de placement d'ouvriers, le tableau de culte peut être échangé entre les jeux, pour une expérience différente. Le tableau de culte de Cthulhu ne se joue pas de la même manière que le tableau de culte de la Chèvre Noire, et ils nécessitent des tactiques et une planification différentes.
